About bunion surgery
A bunion is a lump which forms in the first toe as a result of extreme pressure. This condition is most commonly found among women used to wearing high heels. The pressure on this toe causes it to bend towards the second toe of our feet.
Slowly, the structure of the toe changes. Following this, bunion’s painful symptoms begin. A bunion surgery is thus required to remove this painful condition.
The bunion condition
The human toe is made up of bones, muscles, tendons, and tissues. There are two bones in each toe. The first bone is longer than the second bone which is towards the toe. In a person who has developed the bunion condition, the long bone that connects the feet with the toe, moves out of its position.
As a result of this, the second bone that is at the tip of the toe , gets bent towards the second toe. In this process, the long bone continues to grow, thus forming the bony lump. This often leads to severe inflammation. In severe cases of bunion, a person may develop bursitis or arthritis.
There are subtypes in the bunion condition. One such subtype is the adolescent bunion. While an adult’s bunion develops from wearing a certain kind of shoe, adolescent bunion is a genetic condition. Sometimes, the bony lump is formed at the end toe. In this case, the condition is called bunionette.
Causes of bunion
As mentioned earlier, a bunion is generally caused by shoes that press onto the toes of the person, such as high heels or ill-fitted shoes. Other than this, a bunion may also be genetically inherited or can be caused by some arthritic condition. In some cases of polio as well, a bunion toe may develop.

Non-surgical treatments for bunion
Bunion surgery is the last resort. The doctor would first resort to non-surgical methods to alleviate the symptoms of bunion foot. They are:-
1. Wearing comfortable footwear
Wearing shoes that rightly fight is a very important part of treatment. In order for the right fit, one must look out for shoes that do not put pressure on the toes. Sometimes, there are instruments that one can use to stretch out the insides of the shoes.
2. Padding
This is also a common remedy that a doctor would suggest. Padding the area of the toes will protect it from further progression of the disease and may bring some comfort.
3. Assistive devices
In this, devices such as an orthotic is suggested which may be obtained from the drugstore. These are shoes made specifically for bunion feet and have special spaces in between for each toe’s proper placement.
4. Pain and anti-inflammatory medication
In most cases, the doctor would prescribe pain medications alongside some anti-inflammatory medication to address the symptoms. These may be taken alongside the correct usage of the right shoes.
5. Ice-packs
Ice-packs help a great deal in alleviating symptoms such as swelling and redness.
Surgical intervention is only required when the bunion condition is severe and may lead to other bone conditions such as arthritis.

In the third step, the surgeon accesses the parts and removes or repairs the damaged parts with the help of small wires, screws, and metal plates.
In the last step, the surgeon closes the incision with stitches and bandages.

The patient will be taken to a recovery room where the effects of anesthesia will wear off. The patient will be discharged on the same day. However, if there are complications, the patient may be kept for one day or two depending on the situation.
Upon discharge, the doctor will advise the patient on things to do for faster recovery. Some of them will be:-
