About blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty comes from the Greek word “blepharon” and “plassein”, which means “eyelid” and “to form”, respectively. This is a plastic surgery that is aimed at enhancing one’s sagging eyes.

This can be done on the upper eyelids and lower eyelids. Apart from being an anti-aging treatment, this eyelid surgery also enhances one vision by reconstructing the area surrounding one’s eyes.

In a blepharoplasty, fats and muscles surrounding the area of our eyes are removed and/or readjusted. This process thereby not only corrects the effects of aging but also enhances the functioning of the eyes when the sagging skin interferes with one’s peripheral vision.

Benefits of blepharoplasty

The main benefits of this surgery is to:-

  • Remove sagging skin that may sometimes interfere with one’s vision.
  • Remove fats that are deposited around the eye.
  • Adjust the excessive skin in lower eyelids.
  • Enhance the facial aesthetics.

Eligibility criteria for blepharoplasty

The perfect candidate for this surgery is someone who wants to correct the effects of aging like  sagging skin around the eye. Sometimes it interferez with one’s side vision. Thus the perfect candidate is someone who is willing to correct this and has realistic expectations from this eyelid surgery.

Apart from this, one needs to undergo a physical evaluation while consulting the doctor. It is the doctor who, after the examination and discussion with the patient, determines if one is perfectly fit for this surgery.

The person is also required to inform the doctor about any other medical conditions such as:-

  • Glaucoma
  • Dry eye
  • Detached retina
  • Thyroid diseases
  • Heart problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes

Before the blepharoplasty surgery

Once the doctor has cleared candidature of the  patient, the doctor will determine what kind of anesthesia is to be used.

There are two types of anesthesia. They are general and local anesthesia. The former makes the patient unconscious entirely while the latter makes only the eyes numb. A patient under local anesthesia is conscious throughout the surgery as against a general anesthesia.

Prior to the commencement of the surgery, the patient is required to:-

  • Stop taking blood thinning medicines such as anti-inflammatory drugs and over-the-counter pain medications.
  • Stop smoking two weeks before the surgical date.
  • Not to consume alcohol as it is a blood-thinning agent.
  • Take a light meal prior to the day of surgery.
  • Stop any kind of liquid or solid food prior to the night of the surgery. Medicines for any health conditions should be taken only with a small sip of water.
  • Not use any cosmetics on the face on the day of the surgery.

This surgery may be performed on an inpatient or outpatient basis, making same-day discharge possible.

During the blepharoplasty surgery

During the surgery, if the patient is given general anesthesia then it will be injected into the body through an IV line. If it is local anesthesia then a syringe is used to inject this drug. In complicated cases, the doctor usually uses general anesthesia. The effect of this lasts for up to two hours.

This surgery takes around two hours if both, upper and lower eyelids, require correction. Thus for a pair of eyes where the corrections required are in four places, the doctor will work on the upper eyelids first.

In the next step, an incision is made along the natural lines of the patient’s eyelids. Through the incision made, the doctor will be able to access the underlying fats, skin, and tissues. Following this, the excessive fats and tissues are removed. The skin is then readjusted.

In the last stage the doctor closes the incision with stitches.

Working on the lower eyelids is a little different. There are various techniques available. The doctor may either make an incision inside the lower eyelid. Following this, the excessive fats are removed. This technique doesn’t require stitches. The doctor may instead use an erbium laser for the lines inside the skin.

Another method is the incision method. Here the incision is made from the lower eyelid margin. Through this, the doctor  accesses the fats and tissues inside and removes the excessive ones. The doctor then uses laser resurfacing to seal the wounds. This is done in both the techniques.

After blepharoplasty surgery

After the surgery, the patient is shifted to a recovery room and is kept there till the effects of anesthesia wears off.

After waking up, the patient may experience a blurry vision. This is due to the ointment that is applied on the eyes to keep them moist in the recovery room. As a result of this, the patient may also wake up with dry or watery eyes and be sensitive to light.

Post-surgical care for blepharoplasty

On the night after the surgery, the patient is recommended to use ice packs. The doctor will give the patient instructions on how to work with the new eyelids after surgery. As a part of this, the patient could be suggested to sleep with the head raised a little higher than usual.

The stitches are kept for a few days. The patient needs another visit to the doctor for it’s removal. The patient may also feel as a result of the surgery the following side-effects:-

  • Swelling at the surgical site.
  • Bruising at the surgical site.
  • Pain and discomfort.

It is completely normal to develop these side-effects. They go away after a week or two.

The doctor’s advice to the patient during this time involves:-

  • Using ice packs for about an hour every night from the day of surgery.
  • Carefully clean the surgical wounds by ointment suggested.
  • Avoid any heavy lifting.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Refrain from scratching or rubbing the eyes.
  • Refrain from using contact lenses for at least fifteen days.

Risks involved in blepharoplasty

The risks involved with this eyelid surgery are:-

  • Infection at the surgical site.
  • Bleeding from the surgical site.
  • Dry eyes.
  • Loss of vision.
  • Scarring of the area.
  • Inability to close the eyes.

The patient ought to seek immediate help if they experience:-

  • Chest pain.
  • Vision loss.
  • Breathing problems.
  • Severe eye pain.
