News channels are buzzing again with Covid news: there is a new variant, it is contagious and spreading fast in India. Should you be worried?

The new variant of Covid 19 is called JN 1 and it is on the rise across India including Delhi, Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. World health organization has designated this new variant as a variant of interest due to its capability of high transmissibility and partially bypass immunity due to previous infections or vaccinations.

Symptoms of the new Covid 19 variant JN. 1

The symptoms are similar in nature as what was observed in Omicron strains like dry cough, fever, sore throat, headache, fatigue and muscle aches. Diarrhea and loss of appetite are being reported more.

Is the new Covid 19 variant JN. 1 severe?

Despite spreading at a fast pace in countries like Singapore, India and Hong Kong, the severity of the variant is mild and does not require hospitalization, unless an individual has low immunity.

Should you be worried?

The health authorities have emphasized that there is no reason for panic. Most of the reported cases are mild and that is not a point of concern for the healthcare system. However, precaution is advised especially for people who have had respiratory concerns and low immunity. 

Is travel affected due to this new variant?
