About hair transplant

Hair transplant is a minimally invasive technique that aims to treat baldness. The baldness could be in places such as the head, chest or even eyebrows. It could be a result of anything like a prior surgery or accidents. Sometimes baldness is a result of :-

  • Medications
  • Stress
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Prior illness

Eligible candidates for hair transplant

The perfect candidates for hair transplant are the people who:-

  • Have been experiencing male pattern baldness for more than five years.
  • Have undergone some accident or trauma that resulted in patches of baldness.
  • Have been experiencing hair loss for a considerable amount of time as a result of cosmetic surgery such as a facelift surgery.
  • Have a clear mindset on getting a hair transplant surgery.
  • Have realistic expectations about the outcome.
  • Is physically healthy.

It is best if the candidate is over 25 years of age.

Before getting a hair transplant

Prior to getting a hair transplant surgery, the person considering the transplant needs to research well on which doctor to consult. One must make sure that the surgeon is certified and has had a good past experience. Asking the surgeon for before-and-after pictures of his/her prior patient helps in making the ultimate decision.

Upon first consultation, the candidate must discuss the reasons for consideration of the surgery. Some other things that should be relayed to the surgeon are:-

  • Candidate’s previous medical history.
  • Candidate’s overall physical health.
  • Candidate’s overall diet and lifestyle.

One should not undergo hair transplant surgery if the hair loss is spread evenly throughout the scalp, instead of patches of baldness. Additionally, when there is hair loss due to certain medicines such as chemotherapy, hair transplant is not a fitting option.

Tests required for hair transplant

The tests that will be suggested prior to hair transplant surgery are Preoperative blood tests such as CBC, HCV,  bleeding time, clotting time, PT, APTT, ECG  HIV,  Random blood sugar, and HBsAG.

Hair transplant procedure

At first the surgeon will clean the scalp of the patient. Following this, local anesthesia is used to numb the area of transplant.

There are two methods of hair transplant. In one of them, known as the ‘follicular unit transplantation’, the surgeon makes an incision at the back of the head.

Following this, the surgeon takes out a portion of the scalp and closes the incision. This section is then made ready to be transplanted by separating them into small portions.

In the second method, also known as the ‘follicular unit extraction’, the surgeon makes multiple small incisions at the back of the head. Following this, the surgeon prepares the site that is to receive the hair follicles.

For this, small holes are made with the help of a needle. The extracted hair is transplanted in these holes. The transplanted area is closed off with bandages. It takes multiple sessions to complete a hair transplant surgery. The sessions are generally spanned out over months.

Recovering after hair transplant surgery

The surgery will take over two-three hours. It could also take longer depending on the amount of hair that is being transplanted. After the surgery, the candidate may awaken with pain and soreness.

For this, the surgeon will recommend some pain and anti-inflammatory medications. The candidate is also prescribed antibiotics to reduce the chances of infection at the surgical site.

Stitches at the surgical site are opened after a week. Candidates can go back to work in the second week. During this time, the person may experience some amount of hair fall. This is natural as the scalp prepares for new hair growth.

The effects of this surgery begin to appear from the eighth month.

Hair transplant side effects

The complications that may arise from hair transplant are:-

  • Infection or itching.
  • Excessive bleeding.
  • Swelling or bruising.
  • Numbness at the transplanted/graft site.
  • Temporary loss of hair.
  • Folliculitis or infection in the follicles.
  • Unnatural looking new hair.

Most of the side effects are temporary and go away with time.

For a hair transplant procedure, it is very important for the candidate to be aware of the realistic outcome. The candidate may also need to undergo some other type of treatment for hair loss depending on the situation.
