About facelift surgery

Facelift surgery is primarily done on the lower part of one’s face and along the necklines. It thus reduces the effects of aging like the sagging skin between the nose and mouth, wrinkles in the neck and chin, and excessive skin tissues around one’s lower facial area.

Facelift surgery is often done in conjunction with eyelid surgery and brow lift surgery. Together, they help reduce the effects on aging on the overall region of our faces. However, it is important to keep in mind that a facelift surgery will not change one’s primary appearance. Neither will this surgery further stop the effects of aging.

Eligibility criteria for facelift surgery

The perfect candidate for a facelift surgery is someone who has the following triats:-

  • Physically healthy.
  • Does not have any other ailments that will reduce chances of healing.
  • Non-smoker.
  • Between the ages of 40-60 as this is the time when the effects of aging become most visible.
  • Has realistic expectations. Facelift surgery does not stop the process of aging but can only reduce its effects by 6-7 years.

Facelift surgery procedure

In order to get a facelift surgery, one ought to visit a plastic surgeon first and discuss the outcomes of this surgery. Generally, your surgeon will first evaluate you on your overall health and then recommend the surgery.

Tests to be conducted for a facelift surgery

After a discussion, the surgeon will conduct the following tests:-

  • Past medical history – Here the patient must discuss with the surgeon about their medical history such as a previous plastic surgery or normal surgery.
  • History of medicine consumption- The patient must also let the doctor know about any medicine that they are consuming.
  • Facial exam- the surgeon will conduct an exam of your face, take pictures, and examine your bone structures and the sagging skin.

Before the facelift surgery

After the examination results, the surgeon shares the result with the candidate and has an open conversation with them.

Once the patient is cleared for the surgery, the surgeon may advise the patient to refrain from:-

  • Blood thinning agents such as pain-killers and alcohol.
  • Smoking.
  • Eating any solid or liquid food from midnight onwards on the night before the surgery.
  • Medicines that cannot be avoided could be taken with a small sip of water.

Alongside this, the patient will be asked to thoroughly wash the face and hair before the surgery.

Facelift surgical procedure

The surgery commences with a general or local anesthesia. A general anesthesia will leave the patient unconscious whereas a local anesthesia will only numb the area to be operated on. Sometimes a local anesthesia is given along with a sedative.

After the patient is administered with either anesthesia, the doctor makes incisions. There are three kinds of incisions that can be made.

First, there is  the traditional-incision method which begins at the hairline area and ends at the ears. This is followed up with an incision in the neck area. Second, there is the limited-incision method where the incision begins at the hairline and ends above the ears. This involves a shorter incision.

Third, there is the neck-lift incision where the incision starts at the beginning of the earlobes and extends till the back of the ears into the lower scalp. Following this, a small incision may be made in the chin area.

After the doctor has made the incision, the facial reconstruction begins. This procedure involves removing any excessive fats, tissues, and skin.

This surgery takes about two-three hours. Following the reconstructive technique, the incisions are closed and sealed with bandages.

Post-surgery procedure

Immediately after the surgery, the patient is put under observation. The facelift surgery can be done on an outpatient or inpatient basis. Generally, the patient has to wait until the effects of the anesthesia wears off. If the patient was given a general anesthesia, then the patient may have to stay for a night at the hospital.

When the patient wakes up, they may find have the following symptoms:-

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Mild pain
  • Numbness

These are the general symptoms that go away within a few days. However, one must consult the doctor immediately if and when there is:-

  • Shortness of breath.
  • Chest pain.
  • Extreme pain in one side of the face.

Recovery after facelift surgery

In the first few days of the surgery, the patient will be advised to sleep with the head elevated. Furthermore, the doctor’s prescribed pain and anti-inflammatory medicines are to be taken on time. It is best if the patient applies ice packs once a day. This will help with the swelling, bruising, and pain.

Stitches will be removed a week after the surgery. Prior to this, the patient will have bandages to support the face. It takes a total of one month to recover completely from this surgery.

Some of the common risks associated with facelift surgery are:-
